International Students: Credit Cards

Getting credit cards for international students is possible, even if you're not a citizen of the country you're studying in. Here are some options: Bank of America; Citibank; Bank of America; Discover it(r); Chase Freedom Student. These cards offer a variety of benefits that are very popular among students.

Citibank

International students have several options for credit cards. The Deserve EDU Student Mastercard does not require a security deposit or annual fee and offers 1% cash back on purchases. This card can be used by international students who don't have an ITIN. It is issued via WebBank and does no require a Social Security card. It does not have an annual fee nor a credit score requirement.

Citibank offers several student credit cards. Some of them are easy to qualify for, while others are not. Some are limited to students of specific institutions. Others require a good credit score.

Bank of America

Bank of America offers several credit cards to international students. These cards may be a better choice than your standard student card because they have no annual fee and offer 1% cash back on purchases. You will need an ITIN/SSN if you do NOT have a social insurance number. Capital One's Platinum cards do not charge annual fees, but they offer limited rewards.

Chase Sapphire Reserve may be the right card for you if it's your first time on a long-term trip. This credit cards has no foreign transaction fees or annual fees. It also has the option to increase your credit limit after you have made five on-time monthly payments. The annual percentage rate is typically around 20%.

Students can earn 5% cashback with the Discover it(r) Credit Card. The card also gives you 1% cashback on all other purchases. On purchases at restaurants and gas stations, the cashback is available. Students can save money by using the Discover it card.


This card does not have an annual fee and offers a competitive rewards rate. This card does not require you to have a minimum credit rating. This card is ideal for students with limited credit scores. Discover will match any cash earned in the first year after you open your card.

Chase Freedom Student

You might want to look into a Chase Freedom Student Credit Card for International Students if you are studying abroad. This card is eligible for 1% cashback on all purchases. However, you don't need to spend a particular amount in order to receive it. Activating your card automatically puts you into a nine-month program offering 50% off on eligible purchases. It does not come with an annual fee. There are however a few terms and conditions.

Chase Freedom Student creditcard is a great option if you don't have much disposable income but don't plan to spend on luxurious items. It has no annual fee and no minimum spending requirements. The card also offers a $50 bonus when you make your first purchase within three months. You will also receive a $20 bonus when you reach your fifth year anniversary.

Capital One

Capital One credit cards make the best choice for international students. This card is designed for international students and offers cash back rewards. This card does not have foreign transaction fees or annual fees. You may be eligible for credit line increases after five monthly on-time payments. The card also offers cash back of 1.25% on all purchases. However, if you don't have a stable source of income, this credit card may not be for you.

An international student may not have an extensive credit history. Capital One Journey Student Credit Card doesn't have an annual fee. It does not require a SSN and offers 1% cashback. Capital One Platinum Credit Card, with no annual fee or SSN requirement, is another great option for international student.
